Chapter Seven

Sound of Madness

Finn had grabbed his Glock from the kitchen counter on the way up, but when they burst into Izzy’s room, it took less than a second to realize it wasn’t going to do him a bit of good. There was no adversary other than a freaked-out twenty-three-year-old. Izzy stood in the middle of the room, her back pressed against the four-poster bed. Her eyes were darting and panicked, and her chest rose violently with every breath.

“Hey, Isabelle, it’s—” Before Finn completed the sentence, a lamp flew at his head. He ducked, and it shattered against the wall. Not only had Izzy not moved, the damn thing had been nowhere near her in the first place. “Jodi?”

She shook her head, her gaze shifting from one point of entry to another. “There’s nothing—nothing—in the bedroom with her. No security breach. No anything.”

As they stood there talking, items all over the room rose off the floor and began spinning around the young blonde. Izzy stood in the midst of the maelstrom, pressed her hands to her temples, and screamed so loudly that Finn wanted to cover his own ears.

It was like the night of the raid all over again. Screaming and debris and a crackling energy in the air that spoke of violence to come. He pushed back the memory, pushed back the pain that arced over the scars on his back. He wasn’t in the desert, and his friends weren’t here. This time he only had to look out for himself.

And his damn partner.

For all her bluster, though, Jodi wasn’t moving or even offering up a plan. Instead, her gaze shifted over the room as if looking for data to magically start pouring out of the walls and tell her what needed to be done.

Damn it.

He didn’t care about the fucking chain of command anymore. This wasn’t the time or place for her way of doing things. He’d seen how life turned out when delays led to death. Not this time, not with her safety on the line. Whether Jodi liked it or not, decisive action was needed, and that meant him following his instincts, which had the same phrase playing on repeat: subdue the target.

Not wanting to add an extra element of danger to the situation, he dropped his gun onto the carpet and kicked it into the hallway. Then he offered up a silent prayer and dove into the storm.

Something smashed against his head and shattered into fragments. Porcelain or some other sharp bits sliced into his skin as they flew by. He batted away a stuffed bear and neatly ducked a trophy of some sort. He couldn’t afford impact with another projectile. Some of the things in here could kill a guy if they hit right.

In the center of Izzy’s strange madness at last, he approached the girl. Her eyes looked as if they’d pop out of their sockets at any second. And when Jodi made a noise, Izzy turned toward her. No way. Finn wasn’t losing his partner, especially not with the unfinished business between them.
